Still, I suppose what delighted me on first hearing streaming audio were feelings similar, perhaps, to those experienced by the "distance fiends"-- the term Susan Smulyan uses for early radio listeners in the process of changing how they thought about space and time, eavesdroping on distant places. As Jody Berland notes, radio listeners experience the "shrinking" of space, an experience most people now take for granted, though the Web has made it "new" again-- and newly marketable. Sixty-five years later, I'm surfing the Web with my player open, looking for more and more audio sites on the digital soundscape, more spaces to "conquer."
