Towards a Rhetoric of Tactile Pictures

section: Conclusions

My analysis marks a beginning, a first effort at investigating the rhetoric of tactile pictures. Kress and van Leeuwen's work provides a sound base and can act as a guide for future investigations. The textual metafunction needs to be analysed in tactile pictures and the interrelationships among the metafunctions explored. Such studies will benefit both those who rely on tactile pictures for their education and employment, and those who study rhetoric in its many manifestations. Tactile pictures offer rhetoric scholars a third semiotic code which can shed light on both language and visual images. The possibilities are many, the available literature is limited, and the potential for taking part in the development of a new semiotic code is real. Rhetoric scholars, I hope, will see the possibilities and add tactile pictures to their field of study.
